My kids LOVE playing with their colored rice and I am always thinking up things to do with it. Not only is rice great for sensory play it is also awesome stick down into glue. We have in the past made colored rice spirals, fireworks, flags and even used it in a spice bottle for some shaking!
Our colored rice tree includes a few pom poms as decor.
To make this cute decorative colored rice tree you will need.
- A cone. We made our own by following the directions in “How to Make a Really Big Cone!” a youtube video.
- Colored rice. We make ours using vinegar with a secret to neutralize the smell!
- Pom poms and a paper star
- school grade glue.
I set up outside for this craft activity adding rice and pom pom’s to 3 separate bowls, one for each of my kids. I also had a 4th bowl with the glue in it, which I had watered down a little bit so it could be painted on the cone.
Paint your cone with glue and let the kids at it with the rice! Mine threw the rice at it from the side and stood up on tippy toes and sprinkled rice from above.
My 18 month old was more interested in the pom poms and loose rice than sticking things, but that is fine, everyone was having fun!
The cone was a bit soggy with all the glue and weighted down with the rice once we had got all the surface covered that only a few pom poms had made it on. I moved the cone inside to dry. Once dry the cone was once again sturdy enough to take some kids poking at it!
I got a small bowl of glue out and let the kids stick the remaining pom poms on for decor as well as the star.
And there we have it!
