Check out this simple how to dye egg shells for kids crafts tutorial.
After I recently made some mac and cheese, I decided to save the shells for some kids crafting.
Here’s how! Firstly, use the eggs! I had made a double batch of mac and cheese, one for freezing, so had about 12 egg shells. We (my 3 year old and I) added them to some soapy water and washed them, making sure we got all the inside area cleaning by rubbing with our fingers.
This was also a fun activity for my egg obsessed 3 year old, I passed him the washed eggs and he packed them in the egg carton. Once all was washed I had him transfer them to a baking tray so that we could dry them in the oven on the lowest heat.
We then got all our dying ingredients out, food coloring, vinegar and a sealable plastic bag.
Update: How to neutralize the vinegar smell.
How To Dye Egg Shells
Separate the eggs into 4 bags, crush them down a bit and cover with vinegar. Add a teaspoon of food coloring, more for deeper coloring. Stand the bags up in a bowl so that if they leak its not all over your counter!
Give the bags a shake every few hours and then leave to stand over night. Drain off the color vinegar the next morning and bake the egg shells dry in a baking tray or foil container.
I love the way the dyed egg shells colors came out!
The egg shells are now ready for crafting!

At what temperature and for how long should the crushed dyed egg shells be baked in the oven?
Nicolette Roux says
I had mine in after baking something at 200C for about 5 min. Basically in a hotish oven till it is dry.

Why vinegar? Would just adding food colouring with water also work?
Nicolette Roux says
Vinegar makes the color stay on the eggs. water, not so much.
