This week I had some fun with the boys making salt dough Easter eggs! Have you done this? It is a very easy way to create Easter eggs that can be used year after year as decoration. When your kids are older you will still have the beautiful, handmade art that they created.
For us it is more about the process than the result, but sometimes the result can be just as awesome!
Easter Egg Keepsakes
1 cup flour
3/4 cup salt
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup cooking oil
Food coloring
Mix up the ingredients in a bowl with a spoon and separate the mixture into smaller bowls to add a few drops of food coloring. Stir some more with the spoon then mix thoroughly with your hands until the color is even. Sometimes it’s necessary to add an extra bit of flour as you want the mixture to be firm and not too sticky.
Lovely bright colors for our salt dough Easter eggs!
Roll the salt dough in the palm of your hand and press into an egg like shape. You may have to do this a few times if you have a toddler like mine, poke poke poke. It is best to place the newly formed salt dough easter eggs directly on the wax paper.
You can either leave the salt dough Easter eggs out to dry naturally or speed up the process with an oven by baking on a low heat for 2/3 hours. I was fortunate enough to have a dehydrator from a friend still so stuck them in there for 2 or 3 hours.
Using our Paper Mache Bowl as the nest, we added some brown pipe cleaners for the nesting material.
The salt dough Easter eggs in a papermache bowl for a nest is a bit hit!
Another activity my boys enjoyed! It has been unpacked and repacked many times in the last 2 days. It also looks GREAT on the table!

How fun! I love finding things that the kids and I can work on together!

The awesome thing is that my toddlers age 2 and 3 are at different stages in what they like to do. So I got some one on one time with both of them. The 3 year old was very into making of the dough and molding the eggs, while my 2 year old was more into gathering the eggs in the basket and then emptying them out again.
