Welcome to another fine motor skills friday! This week we are working on the pincer with some mommy birds and her young.
For this set up you will need:
- an egg tray
- pipe cleaners
- pom poms
- googly eyes
- pegs
- feathers
- small bits of foam or felt for the beaks
- glue gun
Construction of the setup is rather simple. Heat up the glue gun and make 3 dots on your pom pom and use a pair of tweezers to position the eyes and beak in place. Repeat until you have a few baby birds.
For the mother bird I used a wooden peg, added a pair of googly eyes and a feather.
We made 9 little chicks. To make the worms twirl the pipe cleaner around your finger to get a spiral and cut it up the middle to leave neat round worms.
Use the pegs (aka mommy bird) to pick up the pipe cleaners (worms) and feed them to the chicks in the nest.
Complete until all the chicks are fed. My 4 year old really enjoyed this activity.
All the chicks are now fed.
An added activity is to use the pegs to transfer the chicks around the nest.
My 4 year old said this was to tuck the baby birds into bed.
My 19 month old also joined in this activity in her own way. I showed her how to use the pegs to pick up things but she struggled to get a good grip and resorted to using her own fingers to perform the tasks.
More peg practice is coming for this little one 🙂 All in all a very enjoyable activity for the kids!

What a lovely idea! I’d be impressed if your 19m old *could* use the pegs though – they can be SUPER tricky LOL
Nicolette Roux says
she got about 3 squeezes in before the peg twisted out of her grip! She tries to do everything her brothers do, so was very motivated to use the peg as well.. lol
