My kids love playing with dyed color rice in their sensory tub.
Sensory tubs are great for hands on learning, creativity and with many children involved in sharing a tub, social development. For my 3 kids sharing a tub is great practice in sharing with each other, co-operation and some times respecting the other siblings claimed rice corner.
Dyed color rice sensory tub, rainbow!
To make this dyed rice sensory rice tub you will need
- A good sized tub
- Some dyed color rice in various colors (Check out the tutorial on how to make it)
- Various items to explore the tub. We used measuring cups for today’s play.
Put the sensory rice tub on a large sheet so that rice can easily be cleaned up or if you have a lovely day, outside play!

I would really like to make these colored rice for my daughter, however, she just turned one, and I am sure all the rice will end up in her mouth. At what age do you think it should be doable without worrying about my daughter eating raw rice?
Nicolette Roux says
At that age they are going to try to taste almost everything! My suggestion would be to try it after lunchtime for example so that her tummy is full and she is less likely to try to eat it. My 16 month old will play for a while like this until she tries to eat it, then I just remove her.
