Slime has always been one of the sensory doughs I have been scared to try. There are so many out there, some with borax as the main ingredient others with jello and then there is one with chia.
Our friends over at Fun at Home with Kids has a fabulous range of slime recipes and this is where I got the idea to use chia. Unfortunately I could not follow the recipe very well because I lacked one or two of the ingredients. So I did the next best thing. Improvised!
To make this rather slimely dough you will need
- 1/2 cup chia seeds
- 2 cups of water
- 1/2 cup flour
- optional food coloring
First add your chia to the water. It makes a gel like texture as it absorbs the water within 30 odd minutes. You can also leave it overnight in a covered container in the fridge.
I then got a tray out for us to experiment on. I emptied the chia on the tray and kids had a look at the chia gel and used a spoon to poke at it.
Then we got mixing! I poured the flour on top of the chia gel and stirred it up. Then added some color on top. My 2 year old thought this mixing business was great fun!
Once mixed it does look very much like some slimey stuff! It has very little stretch though and reminds me more of some goopy stuff for a sensory exploration. So that’s what we did.
My 2 year old rather enjoyed herself massaging the slime dough, feeling the texture and then sticking her hands in there completely.
Now this slime dough DOES stick to your hands. BUT the cool thing is because of the chia gel like texture it washes off under the tap all in one spray! It leaves NO sticky stuff and NO color stains.
I would definitely make this slime dough again in the future adding a few other items into it to play with!
Pin this idea for later!
