At my gynae appt at 38 weeks, I was told I was 1cm dilated, and she’d be expecting to see me by Wednesday (it was Monday that day) to have baby. I was so excited!!
On Wednesday (clever doctor!) I lost my plug, but had no show, and my waters didnt break, so I sms’d the gynae to ask what I should do. She told me to come into the hospital for a checkup. So I lazed around at home, made a dozen hotdogs, packed some snacks for us in case it was a long wait, and we drove to hospital.
The doc was running late, so we went to Maternity and explained we were waiting for the gynae, so they hooked me up to some machine to check on baby and things, and I had a nice chilled lie down for 20mins. The nurse came in, looked at the machine and said very casually ‘oh, you’re in labor, please get your hospital bag out of the car and go to the Labor Ward. we were like WHAT!!!???’
I was having contractions, but not feeling them. The gynae came soon after that, and examined me, announcing I was FIVE cm dilated, would I like to go home or have my waters broken and have baby today? We were in shock!! (in a very happy way lol). Opted to have my waters broken, as I was DESPERATE to meet baby, and then gynae casually left, saying she’d check in on me in a few hours.
We chatted for the first hour, family came to visit and things were chilled in between some arb contractions, and then they started getting intense and longer. Tried to have a conversation with my dad but realized the time for thinking about any kind of talking was ending, and everyone left. An hour later, and contractions were extremely painful and long, with only a few seconds in between them. The only way I could bear them was to kneel in front of the chair, with my forehead on the seat of the chair, and a cold face cloth on my face. I couldn’t move, and was convinced I was going to die of pain lol.
Despite my weeks of hardcore mental prep, I was fading fast, and begged for my hubby to find the dude who does epidurals. He eventually came, and oh the bliss! Gynae came to check on me and said I was seven cm dilated, she’d come back later; and I spent a good 2-3 hours chatting and chilling. Time came for doc to check me, and I was fully dilated. At that moment, as they were wheeling me into another room to have baby, a childhood friend of mine sms’d to say she’d just had her baby boy, how cool was that! 🙂
I pushed for half an hour like a mad person, (on hindsight, what lousy advice that was!!) I made sure the gynae knew I was scared as anything of an episiotomy and didn’t want one, but she finally said she needed to do one, so hey, what could I do.
Baby was battling to come out so she used suction, and he came out perfect, it was the best feeling seeing and holding him after all that time of waiting for him!! (we tried for 2 years to conceive, so we were really desperate to meet him!)
Gynae took a while to announce things were okay and done, and then said she had a bit of stitching to do.
After fifty minutes of stitching, she told me that after baby was born, she wondered where all the bleeding was still coming from, and that I had torn inside. I didn’t care all that much, the epidural was still going strong and baby was in my arms, bliss! And that is how our first came to be 🙂 <3
