Building toys are great for developing motor skills and hand eye co-ordination. Take a look at these 10 rather popular and brilliant building toys for toddlers and preschoolers.
Building toys are on the top of our wish list for Christmas this year. Although most of these say 3+, my 18 month old plays alongside my 3 and 4 year old.
The more she masters the simple concepts of the building, the more complex her buildings become.

Classic building sets such as Mega Bloks and Melissa and Doug’s Wooden Blocks Set are always great to start with.
I also think the unique peg design of these sticky building blocks is kind of awesome.
I love the idea of gears, with my first pick being the Kaleido Gears. Not only are they gears, but they also have patterns on top!
Bigger sets are also available as well as others.
Another building set that my kids would enjoy is the Stacker Pegs Building Set. It would make a great group play for my 4, 3 and 18 month old with the older kids adding the layers and my younger sticking the pegs in.
Straws & Connectors are great for building up fine motor skills, make houses and forts or where ever your imagination takes you.
For the youngest ones a larger SmartMax Set is excellent to build endless structures with large pieces.
A fabulous building set that has caught my eye is Tobbles. Children can stack, spin, balance, and more. I love the open ended play.
I am once again going to recommend the Magna-Tiles. They are just that great!
Construction Sets are also wonderful for budding builders with so many choices!
For some stacking these Wooden Animal Nesting Blocks are very pretty and store well. Then let’s not forget our puzzle building with jigsaws! Dinosaurs and farm animals are a favorite in my house!
Do you have any favorite building toys for toddlers that you’d recommend? I would love to hear what works at your house.

When buying toys for children under three, make sure they don’t have any small parts. This is a great list. 🙂

Great list! There are several toys here I feel sorry we missed 🙂 My daughter used to love the stacking pegs at her grandma’s place. She was so disappointed when she came this summer and found out that grandparents gave them away to a younger child. Oh, and your pinnable image is so beautiful, you really have a knack for it!

I’ve never seen those sticky building blocks – pretty cool! And the Melissa & Doug block set will be under our Christmas tree this year 🙂
