Foam dough is a taste safe, fun way for kids to explore with their hands and continue to develop those fine motor skills. It’s also a great way for kids to make their own fossil prints! With the weather being nice, kids are no doubt finding rocks, leaves, and all sorts of other treasures outside.
Foam Dough Fossils
This foam dough is a great way to create an imprint of the objects they find. Look below at how to make fossils of your own.
Here is what you will need:
foam dough (you can find our taste safe recipe here)
rocks, leaves, flowers, sticks from outside
plastic place mat or tablecloth
rolling pin
As mentioned, you can use our recipe to make these fossils. It is kid-safe and taste-safe so you don’t need to worry if little ones decide to get bold and test it out.
Directions:
Begin by talking about your outdoor findings. These can be flowers, sticks, stones, beach glass, or other nature findings.
Use the rolling pin to flatten out your foam dough. You want it to be about 1 inch thick for this to work well. You can use a rolling pin or simply pound it out with your hands.
Press your natural findings into the dough. Press firmly so they sink into the dough. Let them sit in the dough for a few seconds. Remove slowly.
You will see that an imprint of the finding will remain in the dough. Look at all of the different details such as the lines, creases, etc.
You can trim around the print with a butter knife if you wish, so that you can separate it from the rest of the dough you are still using.
Repeat, using your other natural findings.
These foam dough fossils are so fun to make, and kids will want to make impressions of everything they can get their hands on. Mix up a batch of foam dough for yourself, then give these foam dough fossils a try!
