Learning all about numbers and simple math is important for building a math foundation for kids. Learning math extends through adulthood. Without a solid foundation, it may never get to a point of practical use. This foundation is built upon number recognition & formation, counting as well as addition and subtraction. These select math activities below are perfect for toddlers through kindergarteners. They are engaging and fun for kids and easy to prep for adults.
Teaching children counting and simple math is more than just learning to recite the numbers in order. Children must gain knowledge and understanding of what the numbers actually mean. There are five math principles that children should learn in order to better understand math concepts. When children are initially learning math concepts it’s important to understand a few concepts. Some of these concepts are the order of the numbers (1,2,3,4, etc), the idea that 5 ducks equals 5 ducks and not 4, the idea that how you count the objects (left to right, top to bottom) doesn’t matter as long as you count them all and the idea that a red ball, a green ball and a blue ball can all be counted as part of the same group. The activities below can help children learn and understand these concepts.
