Learning Shapes Game
Here is how to get started crafting your own game!
Here is what you will need to make your learning shapes matching game for kids:
markers
wood craft sticks, large
scissors
craft foam in assorted colors
craft glue
You can find everything you need for this activity at your local Dollar Store. If you want to do this activity without craft foam, you can always use felt or even craft paper and get the same result.
Directions:
Decide how many shapes you wish to cover in this lesson. A good starting point is circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and star. You can always add more shapes later or add more shapes based on the age of the child.
Set out one craft stick for each shape you are exploring. Use your marker to write the name of each shape on the craft sticks. You will write one shape per craft stick, writing vertically. Make sure your writing is in print, clear, and bold. Allow the writing to dry. Set the sticks aside.
Use your craft foam to make leaves. Cut out simple ovals to create the leaves and then use a dab of glue on the back of each to make them adhere to the sticks. You want to stick them on the opposite side of your writing so they don’t interfere. The sticks should now look like flower stems.
Now, you will create the various shapes which will act as the blooms of the flower! Use the craft foam to cut out the shapes you are covering. You want to do each shape in a different color if possible.
Now present the stems and the shapes to the child. The idea is to match the shape with its name. As they do, they will create a small flower! Do not glue the flower/shape on, so that you can do the activity over and over.
Kids will love assembling their flowers and matching the shapes to their name. This activity not only teaches them about the shapes, but helps them identify the site words as well! As they master these shapes, you can always throw other shapes into the mix.
Gather your supplies and give this simple shape matching game a try. It is a fun way for children learning shapes, and for them to also identify the site words that represent these shapes.
