In the children’s book Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni, we meet an ambitious little inch worm who loves using his body to measure the parts of other animals. He inches his way along, measuring and counting as he goes, taking kids on an adventure that not only brings laughs but encourages counting and other mathematical concepts. Make a Fun Inchworm Craft with the Kids
In the book, we meet an ambitious little inch worm who loves using his body to measure the parts of other animals. He inches his way along, measuring and counting as he goes, taking kids on an adventure that not only brings laughs but encourages counting and other mathematical concepts.
Here’s what you will need to get started on your own pipe cleaner inchworm craft:
Assorted green pipe cleaners
Craft glue
Wood craft stick
Scissors
Pair of plastic googly eyes
For this project we found everything we needed at our local Dollar Store. This is an easy and inexpensive way to make your pipe cleaner inchworm. If you wish, feel free to use various colors of pipe cleaners. The choice is yours to create your pipe cleaner inchworm the way you envision it!
Now that we have supplies, let’s get crafting:
Begin by wrapping each pipe cleaner into tight coils as shown. It is best to begin by folding one end in and just let the wrapping begin. Wrap nice and tight so the coils don’t come loose. Once your coil is wrapped, set it aside.
Repeat the pipe cleaner coiling process so you have about 5 coils in total. You can use coils all of the same color or mix them up if you wish.
Add a dab of glue to the back of each coil and press it to the wood craft stick. Continue this process until all of the coils are glued in place and the craft stick is covered or just about covered.
Then glue to the back of your googly eyes and place them on the front coil. This will be the face of your inchworm.
You can finish off the face of the inchworm by adding a tiny pair of antennae. You can simply cut two small segments of pipe cleaner and glue them to the top of the inchworm’s head. Hold in place until dry and secure.
Once all of your parts are dry, your pipe cleaner inchworm craft can be enjoyed! Kids can use it to tell the story of Inch by Inch, or they can even use it to act out their own tales. This inch worm craft can also be used as a bookmark, or kids can use it as their own unit of measurement and see how many worms long a certain item is. Try measuring a rug, a table, or even their arm.
Head to the library and check out Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni, and after you have enjoyed it grab your craft supplies and give this pipe cleaner inch worm craft a try. It is a fun way to further dive into the story! Happy reading, and happy crafting!
