My kids love to learn about other countries and their cultures. What they eat, how they speak, what they wear, customs, etc… So it always makes a great topic of study for us to get into. Generally, everything we study gets a fun craft or two (maybe 3).
This week we created fun pieces of wearable art from other countries like this African Necklace Paper Plate Craft.
What We Wear Dressing Up Around The World is a bright and colorful book that gives a kids a a peek into the different styles of dress for everyday or for special occasions and customs. We chose to make an African Necklace Paper Plate craft to represent the elaborate beaded Maasai necklaces.
What you will need:
- paper plates
- paint
- beads, sequins
- glue
- scissors
Directions:
Cut out the center of the paper plate, leaving as much of the edge as you can for decorating, but leaving it big enough to be comfortable around a child’s neck. As the children work its a great time to read from the book or discuss the culture you are learning about.
Give your child paints, we use these Kwik Stix whenever we can on art projects because they make it so easy and practically mess free. They are paint but the texture comes out like a melted crayon then dries like a paint and they are super vibrant. Encourage your child to cover as much of the white on the plate as possible.
Allow the paint to dry, with the stix it dries up pretty quick! Add small beads or sequins to use as additional decoration on your African necklace, be sure to use plenty of glue to secure them down.
Dig into a fun book like What We Wear and choose a piece or an entire outfit from another culture and recreate it with your child using supplies you have on hand.
