After you explore The Very Hungry Caterpillar with your kids, why not try making your own hungry caterpillar craft?
In The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, we have the pleasure of following along with a caterpillar as he eats his way through an assortment of foods, not quite satisfying his hunger on the way.
This is a fantastic book for preschoolers as the text isn’t just entertaining, it helps teach concepts such as sequence and numbers.
How to Get Started with the Hungry Caterpillar Craft
This puppet is a fun way for kids to enjoy the story further!
Supplies needed for the puppet:
Green, red, white, yellow, and black craft paper
Scissors
Craft Glue
Pair of craft sticks
We found all the supplies we used for this project at our local craft store. Because these are common craft supplies, chances are you may have them at your house or in your craft stash already!
Now let’s get started making our own very hungry caterpillar puppet!
How to make a hungry caterpillar craft:
Begin by cutting out five green circles. They should be about half dollar in size. You will also cut out an additional circle in this same size. Set aside.
Using the black craft paper, cut out a pair of antenna as well as a few lengthy ovals for feet.
Finish the body of your caterpillar by cutting out two small yellow and two small green circles to make the eyes, plus a tiny black circle for a nose.
Assemble the body of the puppet using craft glue. Allow all pieces to dry.
Once the body is assembled and dry, glue a pair of wood craft sticks to each end of the caterpillar. You want to be sure you glue the sticks to the back of the hungry caterpillar puppet so they don’t show. Optional: we painted our sticks white before attaching them. You can use natural sticks or a color of your choice.
Your very hungry caterpillar puppet is now ready to be enjoyed! Use it to act out the story, or to create your own caterpillar story. Either way it makes for a fun prop that is sure to help kids enjoy the text even more.
Head to the library and check out The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and see how much fun watching the adventures of this very hungry caterpillar can be!
