There is nothing that gets kids quite as excited as a really fun, messy sensory bin. I threw this Muddy Truck edible sensory bin together to go with one of my favorite toddler/preschool books- Little Blue Truck.
The beauty of sensory bins is that you can use what you have on hand and let your little ones imagination soar. It doesn’t have to be perfect or an exact copy of the book ( for example I looked high and low for a blue plastic truck and couldn’t find one). Book based activities like this give your child a chance to expand on the book, learn new vocabulary, build find motor skills, explore their senses, and just have fun.
Little ones love to explore their world by touching and even tasting so I decided to give this activity a delicious edible twist.
Muddy Truck Edible Sensory Bin- Little Blue Truck
The friendly Little Blue Truck has to Beep! Beep! Beep! and Bump!Bump!Bump! it’s way through the mud with the help of farm animals, making it a great theme for this edible sensory bin.
Here is what you will need:
- a package of chocolate pudding
- water
- a shallow bin, at least 1’x1′
- small plastic farm animals
- plastic truck
- whisks, spoons,etc…
- small plastic containers
Directions:
In your tub pour out the chocolate pudding mix (you could also use cake or brownie mix). Add water a little at a time until you reach your desired “muddy” consistency.
Add small trucks, farm animals, measuring spoons/cups and a kid who loves to dive into messy play. I highly recommend that you drop an inexpensive shower curtain liner under this activity to keep it easy to clean up.
Use the playtime in the sensory bin as a learning experience as well, draw letters or simple sight words in the “mud” and have your child identify them. Show them animals and ask them to make the right sound or name them, give them an object to find, or a color to identify.
This activity is probably best done in a diaper or bathing suit, just toss the kids in the tub afterwards for a quick bath.
