Puffy Paint Moon Craft
Hands on projects are always a great way to help what you are teaching sink in to little minds so while having a discussion on the moon. How far away from Earth it is, where it falls in the solar system,
You will need:
- Black construction paper
- 2 T. White craft paint
- 2 T. Glow in the dark paint
- ½ cup All purpose flour
- Plate or bowl
- Black permanent marker
- Paint brush
- Empty water bottle
- Bowl and spoon for mixing
Directions:
Trace your bowl or plate onto black construction paper with the permanent marker several times to create some or all of the moon’s phases. Complete the lines for half moon, crescent, etc…
Mix flour and paints together to combine well.
Instruct your child to paint inside the circle to create their moon, the thicker the paint the better for creating 3 dimensional texture.
Before the paint has a chance to dry demonstrate for them how to stamp the water bottle, lid side down into the paint to create craters all over the moon.
Allow to dry completely.
Cut out your moons if desired to hang it or leave it as it is and add stars and streaking comets with remaining paint or stickers.
While your child works on their moon use some of the following discussion questions to encourage learning and exploration
Discussion questions:
- What is the moon made of?
- Has anyone ever been on the moon?
- When did the first man land on the moon?
- How long does it take to get to the moon?
- What are the different phases of the moon?
- What phase is the moon in now?
