I don’t know about your kids but mine are fascinated by rainbows, every time one appears in the sky its all kinds of exclamations about said rainbow. I love to carry over this interest in our play and learning too.In this activity we we use a rainbow to not only color identify but to practice our counting and fine motor skills.
Rainbow counting and fine motor activity
Supplies Needed:
- Playdough in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple
- Buttons in assorted colors
- Dice
- Color Block Dice
If you can’t find an indigo color of playdough, you can mix blue and purple in equal ratios.
Invite your child to roll each color of playdough into long ropes. This increases their fine motor skills.
After the ropes have been formed arrange them in the colors of the rainbow. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (aka purple)
Use both dice at the same time and have your child roll them. Use the color and number that appears to add the corresponding color buttons to the playdough rainbow.
As an example, if your child rolls a red side and a number 3, they should add 3 red buttons to the red section of the rainbow.
Continue as long as desired for counting practice and color sorting fun!
This activity also works well for fine motor practice.
