The ocean if full of creatures, and these creatures can be found in all sizes. All kinds of ocean life are explored in the children’s book I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry. In this book, children will meet a variety of creatures and explore how they relate to others in size. One ocean animal especially, a squid, is an integral part of the story. Give this book a try and see how much you can learn about ocean life, then make your own squid puppet craft like the one you see here.
How to Make a Squid Puppet Craft
Supplies needed:
crafting felt
wood craft stick
scissors
craft glue
For this project you can use any color felt you wish. You will find that squids come in all sorts of colors from white, to pink, to blue. Choose a color that works for you!
Directions:
Begin by cutting out the body of your squid. If you wish, you can trace an outline with pencil first. Squid don’t have a very defined body shape, so an elongated oval like we did here is a good starting point. Cut out and set aside.
You now want to make the eyes of the squid. Simple black and white circles glued together make the perfect little beady eyes.
Glue the eyes to the top of your shape to create the face of the squid.
Now, create the tentacles of the squid. Just simple strips of various sizes are ideal. Cut the strips from your crafting felt and set aside.
The body of your squid can now be assembled. To do this, glue the tentacles to the underside of the squid body so they are hanging.
Now, attach the body of the squid to the craft stick. Just a dab of glue will hold it into place.
Once your squid is glued to the craft stick, the fun can begin! Your squid puppet can be used to tell stories, act out fingerplays, as a bookmark, or even as a reading buddy. You don’t have to stop at just one. In fact why not make a few?
Give this fun children’s book a try and then make your own squid puppet. It is a great way to explore the text further.
