How to Set Up Straw Races for Kids

It is a fun game that helps them act like the wind and really get things moving! Here is what you will need to get started!

Supplies needed:

cotton balls
colorful paper straws
tape (choose any kind of tape but clear)
markers

You can find all of the supplies mentioned here at your local Dollar Store. We chose to use paper straws because they can be recycled when done and don’t pose any environmental threat. They work just as well as plastic!

Directions:

Begin by creating a finish line. This can be at the end of the table or a counter top. Decide where you want your finish line to be, and place a long strip of tape in that spot. Choose a colorful, easy peel tape such as washi tape. This way it is easy to spot and easy to clean up when done.

Create a starting line. This line should be a few feet away from your finish line. Once you pick the spot, repeat the process. Lay a piece of tape down and mark the spot.

Place your cotton balls on the starting line. Before you begin, decide how many cotton balls you want each player to have. 3-5 is ideal. Use the markers to make colored dots on the cotton balls so each player knows which one is theirs. One player can be blue, one can be red, etc.

Have each player take a straw. The object of the game is to make their own wind by blowing through the straw. The wind they create should move the cotton ball from the starting line to the finish line. The first player to get all of their cotton balls across the finish line wins!
