Little girl’s and little boy’s rooms should be fun and reflect the personalities of the little ones who inhabit them. But that doesn’t mean that all decorating rules go out the window. When decorating a kids bedroom there are some important things to keep in mind.
Decorating A Kids Bedroom
Theme Rooms for Kids
While theme rooms may seem cute, overly juvenile and cartoonish rooms will grow tired quickly. A well-decorated space that uses more traditional decorating rules will appeal to all of the members of the household and will last for many years.
Decorate with Color and Pattern
Pink and blue? Feel free to explore. When it comes to decorating a kids bedroom, venture beyond the usual color scheme and try something different. Just about anything goes in a kid’s room, so let them have some say. If a bold paint color seems a bit intimidating, graphic bedding and accessories are a great way to liven up the room. They’re also easy to change as the child grows and his or her tastes evolve. Do remember to choose fabrics that are durable, as kids’ rooms tend to take a bit of a beating. Opt for things that are easy to wash and consider slipcovers for furniture as they make cleaning a breeze.
Choose Furniture That Will Last
This is where it’s important to purchase items that will last. While it’s tempting to buy cheap furniture under the assumption kids will grow tired of it and it will be replaced, it’s really better to buy furniture that can grow with them. A beautiful armoire can hold clothing, toys, and a multitude of other items, and the child will have it for years to come. A good quality chest of drawers will look great and stand the test of time. Teach kids about quality and help them to appreciate good style from an early age.

Lighting and Flooring for Children’s Rooms
Make sure child’s bedroom has a lot of light. A bedside lamp is necessary for bedtime stories, while a desk lamp is a must for activity areas where arts and crafts or homework will be done. And of course, don’t forget the ever-important night-lights. An overhead light is also important for when kids are playing on the floor. This is where a rug is useful. Make sure there’s a soft surface to cushion the little ones while they play. If there’s an area rug as opposed to wall-to-wall carpeting, consider adding extra padding underneath for ultimate comfort. A rug is also a spot to add an extra dash of color.
Storage and Organization in Kids’ Bedrooms
Storage is always important, but rarely more so than in a kids bedroom. Plan out where to use organizational pieces such as a tall chest of drawers, shelving, cabinets, etc., and decide what will go where. Toys and games need to be reached by shorter arms, while decorative pieces can go up higher. Keep things organized with baskets and bins that are designated for specific items. Not only will it keep things organized for adults, it will involve kids in the clean up process and teach them about organization.
These are my favorite tips for raising daughters.
The most important thing to remember when decorating a child’s room is to fill it with things they love and that they will treasure as they grow older.
