Learning Numbers with a Counting Caterpillar Craft for Kids

Counting Caterpillars Craft for Learning Numbers

This craft allows children to make their own caterpillar one number at a time, helping them understand number identification and sequence. Look below at how to make your own learning numbers caterpillar craft for kids, and see how fun learning numbers can be.

Here is what you will need:

white paper plate
craft paper
scissors
glue
markers

Everything we used for this project could be found at our local Dollar Store. White paper plates work best since they help the numbers pop more, but feel free to use what you have on hand.

Directions:

Begin by creating the main body of your caterpillar. To do this you will cut a C shape out of the paper plate. Discard the remaining portion of the paper plate, or recycle it!

Now, cut large circles from your craft paper. You want your circles to be about 1 inch in size and identical. Cut one circle out in each color.

Take your markers and write numbers 1-10 on your circles. Write one number per circle. Make sure your numbers are written large and clear.

Your learning numbers caterpillar can now be assembled. Line up the circles in numerical order on the caterpillars body. Just add glue and press into place.

Once the segments of the body are all lined up, you can add a face and other features to the caterpillar such as legs and antennae.

You can now display your caterpillar for all to see! This is a fun way to go about learning numbers, counting, talking about sequencing, and so much more.

On a side note, there are so many children’s books out there about caterpillars that this craft could pair up with nicely as well! The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is an excellent suggestion! This is also a book that focuses on sequence so it would pair with this craft quite well.
