This fun and simple activity is a great way to practice some simple math skills, build up fine motor skills, as well as adding in a little science with a talk about flower pollination.
Pollen Transfer Math Activity
I put this Pollen Transfer Math Activity together to go with our The Reason for a Flower study. The Reason for a Flower is a great science text that is engaging with its simplicity and beautiful illustrations.
You will need:
- yellow pompoms
- 2 small dishes
I had these great flower shaped dishes that I picked up from Dollar Tree last year that made the perfect flower to put our “pollen” into.
You can plan a couple of different ways, for younger children they can simply transfer the pom poms from one dish to the other using the tongs/pincers.
You can give them a specific number to transfer, use a number flash card to help them learn to identify the numbers.
For preschoolers -let them roll 2 dice and place the number on one die into one cup, and then put the matching amount of the second die into the second dish. Then ask them to add them together or you can have them subtract one die from the other.
Instead of dice give your preschooler a simple flashcard and have them solve the problem using the pompoms.
